US Tennis WAG Morgan Riddle Is Quizzed On Aussie Slang – But One Word Leaves Her Totally Stumped

US tennis WAG Morgan Riddle has been quizzed on common Aussie slang terms – with words such as ‘snag’, ‘dunny’, and ‘mainy’ leaving her most baffled.

The glamorous girlfriend of tennis star Taylor Fritz – who’s currently Down Under for the Australian Open – was given an amusing lesson about ‘Australian language’.

Her Sydney socialite friend Sarah Maloney read out a list of words and phrases to see how many Morgan could figure out.

‘This is my sixth year in Australia and I still have no idea what they’re saying so Sarah is going to quiz me on Aussie slang,’ Morgan said in her Instagram video.

During the challenge, she noticed how Aussies have a habit of shortening words, with her pointing out: ‘You guys have nicknames for nicknames.’

One word that caught her off guard was ‘snag’, which simply means a sausage.

But there was a particular ‘niche’ slang that left her completely stumped –  and even many Aussies were scratching their heads: ‘mainy’.

‘A mainy?’ a puzzled Morgan asked.

US tennis WAG Morgan Riddle has been quizzed on common Aussie slang terms – with words such as ‘snag’, ‘dunny’, and ‘munted’ leaving her mostly stumped

Sarah responded: ‘People do driving mainies, you do a walking mainy, a biking mainy… If there’s a party on, you’re just doing mainies by the party.’

Her Aussie friend explained that the word meant ‘spying on someone’ or ‘sussing the vibe’, and refers to the act of doing a loop, driving or walking around an area.

When asked if she knew what ‘Sheila’ was, Morgan replied: ‘Is that a Karen?’

However, Sarah explained it was a term used by a ‘bogan guy’ who would typically call a ‘hot girl’ Sheila.

When it came to ‘munted’, Morgan responded: ‘Sick? On the hunt for a guy?’ – leaving her friend to laugh hysterically.

In Australian slang, munted or ‘on the munt’ refers to someone getting extremely intoxicated by alcohol or drugs.

When Morgan was asked to define ‘sickie’, she asked: ‘That’s a drink, right? Oh you throw up?’

However, her friends explained ‘sickie’ meant ‘pretending to be sick’ to take the day off work to go to the beach.

Morgan laughed at the meaning and responded: ‘That’s so Australian.’

While Morgan nailed slang terms like ‘arvo’, ‘chuck a U-ey’ and ‘shoey’, there were other terms that left her lost for words – such as ‘sickie’ and ‘mainy’

There were a few words Morgan knew the meaning behind – including ‘smoko’ (smoke break), ‘arvo’ (afternoon), ‘chuck a U-ey’ (U-turn), ‘heaps’ (lots of) and a ‘shoey’.

‘Shoey is an Aussie thing where they drink out of a shoe. It’s really gross and disgusting,’ Morgan explained.

She also pointed out that she only learned recently that ‘avo’ meant avocado on toast.

‘I didn’t know that for four years,’ she said.

When asked to define a ‘bogan’, Morgan responded: ‘A country boy? Kind of like a redneck’, to which Sarah confirmed that was correct, adding that a bogan typically had ‘no shoes’ in public.

Her friend asked her if she knew what ‘dunny’ was, with Morgan questioning: ‘Why are these all middle-aged men names?’ before realising it meant ‘bathroom’.

‘So dunny is slang for the loo, which is slang for a toilet,’ Morgan said.

Other terms she learnt during the lesson were ‘cark it’ (dead), ‘rack off’ (f*** off) and ‘adding mayo’.

‘Is mayo like a sandwich?’ a confused Morgan responded, to which her friend explained that it meant ‘adding bulls*** to a story’, or exaggerating.

‘This is iconic,’ another added.

Meanwhile, many Aussies were quick to point out they didn’t know half the words on the list – especially ‘mainy’.

‘I’m Australian and have NEVER heard mainy? WTF is that? Is that what the young kids say these days?’ one said, laughing.

‘Mainy… What the heck is that word?’ another asked.

‘Never heard of mainy either and I’m Aussie,’ one shared.

‘I live in Melbourne and have not heard of half of these words,’ another added.

Some Aussies explained that the term ‘mainy’ referred to doing laps up and down the main street or the main area where people hang out either in a car or on a bike.

Others pointed out that ‘smoko’ actually meant a ‘short break from work’ – generally for coffee, snack or just a rest, not just for smoking a cigarette.

Responding to the girls’ definition of a ‘bogan’, one woman said: ‘Can confirm, I am a true bogan and I always wear shoes. They may be thongs but they’re still shoes.’
